awakkeeeee

i'm not even sure why i still have xanga. probably because i don't want to give up my awesome username. anyway, another vacation at home= another bout of insomnia. the first few days back i slept regularly at 6-7am and woke up at 2-3pm. then today (err, yesterday) i beat my record, falling asleep at around 8:30am. woke up at noon for an eye doctor's appointment and thought, "now is my chance! if i can just stay awake until 10 or 11pm,  i can get a normal night's rest!"

alas. it's 5am and here i am. i conked out at around midnight, woke up at 3 and have been wide awake since. so cruel. these weirdo sleeping habits contribute to weirdo eating habits; i eat only one full meal a day. plus a snack before dinner when i wake up and after dinner at maybe 10. my metabolism is getting really messed up, i'm sure.

i have erratic sleeping patterns when i'm at school, but nothing this bad. someone suggested i go to a sleep clinic to see what's wrong with me and i'm beginning to think they're right.

more folksy stuff

sometimes i worry i am just a stone's throw away from becoming a country music fan. oh well.

because of all my free time at home, and thanks to my sister's netflix account, i recently watched "i'm reed fish." the plot (save for a minor twist) was kinda trite and the main actor looked like he was twelve, but i was pleasantly surprised by this song. schuyler fisk, daughter of sissy spacek, wrote this for the film and performed it herself.

mandy

i'm a wannabe indie music snob but deep down i like kelly clarkson and mandy moore. especially since mandy actually started singing instead of the breathy crap that was her early stuff. i also like acoustic-y covers, so here ya go. ignore the close-up shots of her angst filled expressions and the background images of rihanna.

exploding fruit

the fruit i bought isn't exploding per se... it's more like the bananas have gotten too big for their britches, literally. as if all of a sudden each banana gained a ton of weight and can no longer be contained in its peel. out of a bunch of about eight bananas, six of them have peels that appear to have ripped at the seams. i put them in the fridge so that the fruit flies would go away, but i don't think i have any other choice but to eat them quickly. has anyone ever experienced this banana bursting phenomenon? can you explain it to me? thanks.

now onto random evaluations about my life in korea

things i don't like:
- the fact it is really hard for me to learn korean. as the only korean-american in my class, i have basically had a 21-year head start on communicating with and (theoretically) learning from native korean speakers (i.e. my parents). however, i really suck. i'm not exaggerating. the one white guy in my class knows more korean i do.
- the fact this stinking hakwon won't contact me back for english tutoring. i need a job.
- the fact that when i go back my senior project/paper is waiting. i haven't told my advisor yet that i'm not doing an honors thesis anymore, and therefore have to change my topic slightly. i also think i'm supposed to be doing research for said project, but i don't know what that will entail so i've been putting off e-mailing my advisor
- the weather. it's either hot and humid or cold and hecka rainy

things i do like:
+ jimin. hahaha seriously, i'm so glad she's like 10 min walking distance away
+ jubilee church. i went on sunday and it was really good, i think i'll keep going while i'm here
+ good, cheap food
+ cheap clothes
+ the fact there's always random stuff to do/see/eat
+ seoul public transportation (which greatly facilitates the above bullet point)
+ my korean teachers. well, one of them. haha we have two and one is considerably more fun than the other

mmkay. i have about ten weeks left, let's hope i make the best of it :)

it's a freaking tiny, tiny world

i have only been in korea for two weeks, but i have randomly run into a lot of people i know. i'm getting really weirded out.

1. last week i was wandering around yonsei campus looking for jimin's dorm. after a while i got lost and decided to ask the next people who walked by for directions. about a second later i see these two girls coming up so i ask them, they start to answer, and because they looked familiar i just blurted out in english "do you guys go to ficb?" and yes, they were two girls my year that i had met at sophomore retreat.

2. this past sunday i went to onnuri church's english service, and thought i saw someone i recognized from stanford. but, it was crowded and i wasn't sure so i just left w/mary, wendy and judy. the four of us were waiting for the subway when someone shouts across the tracks, "hey, what school are you guys from?" it was the guy i had seen at church, who was in one of my classes winter quarter and who was also in korea on a ceas fellowship, interning at the u.s. embassy.

3. i am walking with jimin through the main gate of ewha, when a girl stops us and asks, "excuse me, do you know when they close these gates?" i look at her, my jaw drops and i kind of shout, "LYNDA?!?!" i know lynda from connecticut through a mutual friend, but i literally have not seen her since maybe ninth or tenth grade. she happens to be staying in the dorm about 2 feet away from mine for the next week.

4. i was walking up the stairs from the bathroom during one of our breaks when i saw two girls sitting next to each other who looked a little familiar. i kind of shrug it off and go back to my classroom. then all of a sudden i realize that those girls used to go to my home church! they're twins who are ethnically korean but were born and raised in japan, so they're basically japanese. after class ended i saw them again and chatted for a bit. when i was in high school they were at university of hartford for undergrad, and are now in boston for grad school. during the summer, they decided to come to ewha to learn korean, just like i did.

edit: more coincidental meetings by the end of the summer

5. again during a break, i see someone who looks sort of familiar. again, it turns out to be someone from my home church back in connecticut. i didn't realize this until the entire program went on a field trip to a traditional korean theater performance. after the show, i was waiting outside for the rest of my class when someone comes up and yells, "holy ****, sherrie?!" it was startling, to say the least.

6. at jubilee church i turn around and recognize someone as one of the missionaries kcpc was sponsoring. he was heading back to CA and decided to stop by korea. turns out there were quite a few ficb people in korea this summer.

7. i went to jubilee every week, but one week a friend wanted to check out the onnuri service afterwards. so, i go with her and after the service i run into kcpc's cambodia missions team. they were just stopping in korea before going to cambodia.

crazy.

oh and here are some pictures of red mango and ddukbokki. hahaha :)

DSCN0364
yogurt-wise, pinkberry is much better than red mango. but...

DSCN0366
these walnut waffle things rock. sooo good. they also have this grapefruit flavored gelato that is amazing. (i've been three times so far)

DSCN0368
a blurry shot of ddukbokki cooking. hahaha jimin took a video because it looked sooo good bubbling over and stuff.

the end.
